Years before Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa, two companies, ScanSoft and Nuance Communications, merged in 2005 to investigate the growing possibilities of speech recognition. The company successfully developed good speech processing software and grew dramatically over a decade, with a revenue growth rate of 27% per year. The company’s growth halted substantially in 2014. Revenues in 2019 were almost in line with those in 2013. Nuance has faced many hurdles as large computer businesses and formerly customers have become rivals.

Nuance’s story isn’t fascinating. In every primary industry and technology field, startups encounter new challenges. Startups continue to spring up in response to new opportunities. Venture capitalists provide a significant amount of cash to these companies. However, there are specific issues in the startup world. Innovative startups are expanding slower than similar firms in the past.

 We’re used to the idea that technology creates disruptions, with smaller businesses flourishing due to technological innovations, eventually displacing less efficient, older companies. On the other hand, this technology is now cutting industrial business turnover, which has fallen dramatically in the previous two decades. This slowing growth has substantial consequences for both the US and global economies. It has hampered the growth of innovative companies. According to the report, this slower development is linked to decreased productivity growth. This has ramifications for the economy as a whole and individual incomes.

Apple showcased Nuance’s technology in Dragon Dictation when it debuted the iPhone 3GS at the 2009 Worldwide Developers Conference. Samsung and other phone makers indicated an interest in utilizing the device when Apple authorized it. On the list are Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. Nuance’s growth was rapid, both in terms of signing up these big customers and the millions of consumers who bought the iPhone app, which went on to become the iTunes store #1 business productivity software. Siri, which was based on Nuance technology, was unveiled by Apple in 2011. Nuance’s revenues grew to $1.7 billion in 2013.

This growth, however, was only ephemeral. Voice recognition isn’t the only company to anticipate that cloud-based services and computers will become the primary means of human interaction. Voice recognition was utilized for more than superior text dictation; it was also used for shopping, searching for information, choosing movies and music, controlling appliances, etc. It was rapid, hands-free, and a more natural method for interaction than the mouse and keyboard.
