The open merit recruitment system gives female teachers equal opportunities to apply for leadership positions.

That assurance came from the Minister of Education, Heritage and the Arts, Premila Kumar, as she addressed 200 women, leaders and teachers at the Empowering Women in Leadership Education forum at the Labasa Civic Center.

“Think of yourselves as equal and capable, then and only then will you apply for leadership positions,” she said.

The teacher’s salary

Ms Kumar also clarified that teachers’ salaries were not deducted.

“Before 2019 you got all the allowances, the rural allowance, the seniority allowance and all the allowances in place, but at the beginning of 2020 we had a pandemic which had a huge impact on our economy,” said Ms Kumar.

However, she explained that due to the pandemic and its huge impact on the economy and the mini budget, a number of things have been cut.

“To maintain your salary and continue to pay you, we had to remove all these allowances,” she said.

Praise of Dr. Ali

Women in Business Chair Dr. Nur Bano Ali commended the Ministry of Education for setting up a platform for female teachers in leadership positions in hopes of breaking down prejudices against the empowerment of women.

“This is the first time the Ministry of Education has done this for female teachers,” Dr Ali said.
